JOIN FESTIVAL CHORUS IN 2017 – Exclusive opportunity for Tenors and Basses
Festival Chorus is the largest of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, with 400 members who come together twice a year to perform a diverse range of music at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. Previous Festival Chorus programs include Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Leonard Bernstein’s hit musical Wonderful Town and earlier this year, the Rossini Stabat Mater. The choir has premiered compositions by Matthew Hindson and Carl Vine, and collaborates with organisations such as the Sydney Youth Orchestra.
This year is the tenth anniversary of Festival Chorus and is the biggest group of singers yet. Joining will give you the opportunity to perform not only with hundreds of other passionate singers but also with professional orchestral players and some of Australia’s best soloist vocal artists. You will perform on the iconic Concert Hall stage at the Sydney Opera House.
In October, Festival Chorus perform Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius. This monumental work is as stirringly romantic and grand as you’d expect, with Elgar’s masterful choral writing celebrating the beauty and power of the voice in partnership with the orchestra.
The Festival Chorus Open Day is an opportunity for tenors and basses who are interested in joining the Festival Chorus for Dream of Gerontius. If you can hold a melody and have basic music reading ability then please join us.
Our Music Director, Brett Weymark, will conduct voice placements in small groups in order for him to assess your singing ability and to determine your vocal range. No preparation is required.
If you are successful in joining Festival Chorus this year, you will have the opportunity to develop your music skills with our complimentary choral skills workshops, see further details below. You will also be invited to join again next year without the need to attend another Open Day.
